The Historic England Archive is offering a tour of the Archive, our Historic building and Conservation laboratory at the Engine House, Swindon for Heritage Open Day on 13th September.
This is an opportunity for you to see inside the public archive of England’s historic environment which includes architectural and archaeological records. We hold over 15 million historic photographs, plans, drawings, reports, records and publications, covering England’s archaeology, architecture, social and local history. The tour includes a visit to our environment-controlled store, exploring our Historic office building (once part of the Great Western Railway works) and behind the scenes at the conservation laboratory.
There will be 3 tours on the day, at 11:30, 13:00, and 14:30, running for 1 hour 15 minutes each.
If you have accessibility requirements and you would like to participate in one of the above sessions, please do contact jade-india.balmer@historicengland.org.uk in advance so that we can put the necessary measures in place.
Please note that the tours will involve walking to different areas of the building on 2 floors , we do have lifts avaible to use. Additionally our Archive store can be quite cold, so do please bring a jacket.
