Jane Austen’s guide to being brazen - A bold, brash and beautiful celebration of Austen’s wicked women, and a truly revelatory look at clothes & crime in the eighteenth century – an era when stocking-theft or silk smuggling carried serious consequences.

With fabulous original costume items, criminal history and readings from the outrageous Miss Austen herself.

About the speaker:

Lucy Adlington took an English degree from Cambridge University and an MA in Medieval Studies from the University of York. Lucy specialises in dress history, with a particular interest in Edwardiana and the 1940s. She collects 19th- and 20th-century costume. Her ambition is to own an 18th century gown of Spitalfields silk.Lucy's history books - Great War Fashion, Fashion: Women in World War One and Stitches in Time - The Story of the Clothes We Wear - are rich with unique images and anecdotes. Her new illustrated history Women's Lives and Clothes in WW2: Ready for Action is published October 2019. You can buy Opening the Wardrobe, the unique photo-history of 20th-century fashion, at events.

Lucy also writes history-inspired fiction. Her Carnegie-nominated novel The Red Ribbon is published by HotKey Books, inspired by the dressmakers of Auschwitz. Her new novel Summerland is out now.
