Event description

Description

Climate change will bring more extreme weather to the world, but climate-related disasters are nothing new. India and its neighbouring countries have long suffered from devastating droughts, famines, and cataclysmic cyclones. This lecture by one of the founding scholars of South Asian environmental history will put extreme weather and natural disasters in historical perspective.

Vinita Damodaran is the Director of the Centre for World Environmental History (University of Sussex). A historian of modern Asia, her work uses historical records to understand climate change in the Indian Ocean world.

This is the inaugural public lecture for the University of Bristol's Arts Faculty Centre for the Environmental Humanities.

The event is rearranged from February 2018, when it had to be postponed.
