What happened to Oliver Cromwell’s head?

Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector and ruler of the Commonwealth of England died on the 3rd September 1658 and was given a monarch’s funeral. The body was later exhumed, hanged at Tyburn and beheaded. His head, however, until 1960, had vanished, rumoured to have changed several hands and was reportedly bought and sold.

This discussion considers what may have happened to Cromwell’s head and what possible motives there are for its disappearance, possible sightings and reappearance.
