Event description

Description

Birkbeck’s Methodological Masterclasses allow PhD students to hear how historians produce their work; how they conceptualize their argument, manage and analyze their sources, write, and overcome conceptual challenges they face in using different approaches to historical research. The course includes external lecturers, and members of Birkbeck’s Department of History, Classics, and Archaeology who discuss recently published work. The classes usually consist of a presentation on a particular methodological approach, followed by a long discussion, which develops from responding to the presentation, to considering how the methodological issues raised may apply to PhD students’ own work.

In this session, Dr Leigh Gardner considers methodological challenges of asymmetric economic history, based on her research of imperial economies in West Africa. How are local economies to be measured to conduct economic history from perspectives other than that of the imperial power?
