History Evening

Title:      Safety in Numbers: F.W. Lanchester and the use of Big Wings in the Battle of Britain
Speakers:   Christopher Price & Niall Mackay

The paper that Niall MacKay and Christopher Price will be presenting on examines the Big Wing Controversy in the battle of Britain according to the RAF understanding of the military principle of concentration. This rested on Fuller’s 1916 codification of the principles of war which were based in turn on the work of the engineer and air-power theorist F.W. Lanchester.

We argue that RAF doctrine diverged from this early foundation and that in the Battle of Britain Fighter Command’s 11 and 12 Groups operated according to distinct and opposed concepts of concentration. This doctrinal struggle had important consequences for the Battle and future British operations.
