Pictures of Health: Medicine, the Body and its Image in Late Medieval England
Medicine in England transformed in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, melding centuries-old scholastic traditions with the realities of religious healing. This talk explores how images did more than merely show the body. Medical images conditioned reader-viewers in the way images, bodies and images of bodies ought to look; they also helped readers develop the visual skills to learn from the bodies they looked at.
About Carly Boxer
Carly B. Boxer is Assistant Professor of Art History at Bucknell University. Their work centres on the connections between medieval image-making practices and period ideas about vision, knowledge and the capacity of images to guide thought. Their research has been supported by the Medieval Academy of America, the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, and the Council on Library and Information Resources.
