The Expressway World

Urban expressways are among the most familiar but also reviled objects in the modernist built environment. Built in huge numbers globally in the 1960s, they are now mostly falling down. This talk explores what we do next with the expressway world and how art has helped imagine its future.

About Richard J. Williams

Richard J. Williams is Professor of Contemporary Visual Cultures at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of ten books, mostly about the visualisation of the contemporary city. His latest book is The Expressway World (Polity, 2025).
