History of Christmas in Devon

About this event

Are you thinking about Christmas yet? We are delighted to announce that our December lecture will be by the great Dr Todd Gray who will be talking about - of course - the history of Christmas.

Todd tells us that the celebration of Christmas has altered over the centuries in Devon as it has elsewhere but there have been particularly Devonian features of the holiday. Mummers, the Ashen Faggot and A'Thomasing were once particular features of Christmas in Devon. Outdoor festive lights have become a feature of modern Christmas as have seasonal cards and indoor trees but these too were innovations. When Christmas was cancelled in the 1650s - in the midst of the Commonwealth - it was claimed that it was in Devon that the old traditions continued.

In this illustrated lecture Dr Gray will be sharing with us how Christmas has evolved since the early 1500s; it promises to be a great evening. Please be aware that we will still be respecting social distancing so half as many seats are available as before this terrible plague hit us. So do book early to ensure your place. The event is free to members. Non-members are most welcome to join us but there is a small fee (£3).
