We'll get started with an analysis of Eastern Europe and the Near East at the beginning of the 11th century, exploring the steps towards a climate that would eventually lead to the first crusade near the turn of the century.


What will this course cover?

This course will analyse the policies and context of the Byzantine Empire to understand why its strategic position was so crucial in the events that followed. We’ll focus on the conquests and disruptions caused by the Seljuk Turks, culminating in the pivotal Battle of Manzikert. We will then examine how developments in Western Europe set the stage for the conditions and outcomes of the First Crusade.


What will I get out of this course?

You will gain a deeper understanding of the geopolitical, religious and military forces that shaped the eastern Mediterranean and Western Europe in the lead-up to the First Crusade. Explore the internal dynamics and external pressures facing the Byzantine Empire. The course will cover the crucial turning point at the Battle of Manzikert.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer picture of how these interconnected events reshaped medieval history and laid the groundwork for centuries of crusading conflict.
