The end of the Second World War marked the beginning of a new and challenging chapter for Britain. In this course, we’ll explore the social, economic and political landscape of the immediate post-war years, a period shaped by both austerity and ambition.

Despite struggle, the years between 1945 and 1951 also saw sweeping reforms and bold visions for the future, including the creation of the NHS and the welfare state. This course sheds light on how people lived, coped, and changed the country during a time of great transition and resilience.

What will this course cover?

We’ll look at key developments in post-war Britain, including:

  • The 1945 Labour landslide victory and its impact
  • The foundation of the NHS and major welfare reforms
  • Everyday life under austerity: rationing, housing, and employment
  • Social attitudes, gender roles and cultural change
  • Britain’s place in the world post-empire and post-war

Discussion will also focus on how this period helped shape the Britain we know today.
