Event description

Description

HiTALK is a bi-weekly interactive talk event organized by Leeds University HiTECH society, which aims to bring together brilliant minds, i.e. academic researchers, industry workers and combination thereof, to discuss exciting research and innovation surrounding the field of Advanced Technology (hence the name: HiTECH). Audience of all study backgrounds and learning tiers are welcome to join the talk, which can often be extremely engagement, insightful and inspiring.

Topic context and introduction

Motivations behind this research topic stems from Dr. Actis’ inspiring view that “Our beauty is in our differences, which is true down to the level of the individual cells that make up our body”, and that “Biologists are now appreciating the subtle yet crucial differences amongst every single cell in our body and how these differences affect every stage of human life.”

Thus in this HiTALK series Dr. Actis will discuss the development of an innovative technology based on nanopipettes that will enable the study of these differences with an unprecedented level of detail and how the knowledge generated by this technology will empower biologists for the next 50 years.

Event schedule

The event will involve 20 minute presentation followed by a further 20 minute interactive discussion between Dr. Actis and the event host (audience are very much welcomed to participate to make this as stimulating and interactive as possible!) and end with a 20 minute Q&E, followed by post event drinks and networking.

Expected time schedule:

  1. 1. 1800-1820: Presentation
  2. 2. 1820-1840: Interactive discussion
  3. 3. 1840-1900: Q&A
  4. 4. 1900-1945: Post event drinks and Networking

Speaker Biography

Dr. Paolo Actis is a distinguished and visionary researcher whose expertise extends to specialist research in nanopores, biosensor, single-cell analysis and bio-nanotechnology. Dr Actis obtained his PhD from the Grenoble Institute of Technology (France), and have worked for NASA Ames (US), UC Santa Cruz (US), Imperial College London (UK) and Bio Nano Consulting as a Consultant & Project Manager before landing a role a distinguished University Academic fellow at the University of Leeds. His newest research project involves developing nanoprobes for single-cell analysis and manipulation with single molecule resolution. In his spare time, he loves to playing beach volleyball and cooking (he proclaims to make the best Lasagna this side of the Channel) and he used to surf and practice Krav Maga (with very mediocre results).
