HK Protests and Labour’s China Policy - now *without* Joshua Wong
The Fabian International Policy Group arranged to host Joshua Wong, student leader of the pro-democracy Demosisto Party, to speak at an event on the ongoing protests in Hong Kong and Labour’s China policy. Two weeks before the event, Joshua Wong was been banned from all international travel by the High Court in Hong Kong, frustrating his plans to visit six European countries - including this event in London.
In his absence, Joshua Wong will send a pre-recorded video message to attendees, and we are delighted to welcome the following panelists:
- Dr Stephen Ng, Chinese for Labour
- Dr Eva Pils, King's College London China Institute
- Dr Tim Pringle, SOAS, editor of The China Quarterly
- Yuen Chan, HK Free Press and City University London
- Simon Cheng, formerly of the British Consulate in HK and the LSE
2019 has been a defining year for Hong Kong, a city which sits in the borderlands between Chinese autocracy and Western liberalism. Protests which began in opposition to an Extradition Bill have grown and developed into concrete demands for greater democracy and autonomy, raising questions about the future of Hong Kong and China’s relationship with the Western world.
While many in the West have criticised China’s response to the protests and police brutality, the UK Labour Party has shied away from making a clear statement on Hong Kong. In our event we will explore the reasons for this, and explore what Labour’s China policy would be if elected to Government.
The event will be in Mount Street Jesuit Centre in Mayfair (address above).
Please note that we have sold more tickets than the venue capacity allows, to account for cancellations and no-shows. Seats will be allocated to ticket-holders on a first come, first served basis, and you may be turned away at the door.
