Challenging Oculoplastics Cases

Professor Bernand Chang

BSc MBChB FRCSEd frcoPHTH

Consultant and Ophthalmology Partner

This session is the 8th in a series of virtual, interactive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events hosted by Humber and North Yorkshire (HNY) Integrated Care System (ICS) for the local optometry community.

The HNY ICB footprint covers 7 Ophthalmology Trust sites as well as multiple Independent Sector Providers. The Optometry profession are the primary care specialists that refer the majority of referrals either directly or indirectly (via GP) to these sites.

As part of the Eye Care Collaboration with Optometry and Ophthalmology we are delivering the sessions to:

· Support and inform the local eyecare workforce,

· Foster relationships between local practitioners, Local Optical Committees and secondary care,

· Provide better eyecare for all.

Each 1.5hr session will consist of presentations delivered by local specialists, followed by time for discussion. The sessions are CPD accredited.

This session will be delivered by Professor Bernard Chang, who specialises in Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery and has held the position of President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is passionate about patient care and understands the importance of taking the time to really listen to his patients.

This discussion workshop for Optometrist and Dispensing Opticians considers 3 Oculoplastic cases. Case 1 considers a presentation of an enlarging lid lump and its possible treatment, together with the distinguishing features and management of other lid lumps. Case 2 considers the cause and management of eye irritation following lid surgery to remove a malignant lesion, before discussing the risk factors for eyelid malignancy. The 3rd and final case considers the management and referral options for a person affected by blepharospasm. Other forms of eyelid and facial spasm are also deliberated in Case 3 whilst communication of patient explanations is also pondered throughout the workshop.
