Event description

Description

Due to popular demand we have secured this additional date for 'behind the scens' tours.

There is an exciting opportunity for the general public to see behind the scenes of this former theatre for the first time since the building closed as a venue in 1960. Tread the same routes as our Victorian ancestors took when heading to their seats to watch a fabulous show. See the original Proscenium Arch (top of the stage), walk along the balcony level (1st floor) and see where the former Billiard Room used to be. You may even be able to glimpse the original leaded windows. The tour guide will have digital old photographs and floor plans to show you enroute.

Make sure you book early to avoid disappointment

The Empire Theatre started life at a Public Hall in 1895. It was made into a theatre in 1902, and remained so until its closure in 1960. The building is currently an amusement arcade, but behind the glitz of the lights and machines, hides a wealth of original architecture.

As part of the Heritage Open Day there will also be an exhibiton of old photographs, advertisements and plans etc, together with the draft plans for the imminent restoration and conservation of the external facade and the internal fabric where it is hoped to bring the first and second floors back into use.

It is advisable to book the tour in advance, as there will only be limited tickets available on the day due to the restrictions on the tour route.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Due to the restrictive nature of the tour, including uneven surfaces, dark areas and tight spaces the tour guide will assess ticket holders on the day. If you have any concerns regarding the tour then please contact the organiser as detailed below.

What can I bring into the event?

If you have shopping bags or handbags, these can be left in a secure place (but at your own risk), for the duration of the tour. The exhibition is in a public space with the amusement arcade, so the normal premises policy applies. Sensible footwear is required for those booking the upper levels tour.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact Carol Heidschuster - Townscape Heritage Project Manager for Cleethorpes, at the following email address:

THenquiries@nelincs.gov.uk, or by post addressed to the above person at the following address:

Engie, New Oxford House, George Street, Grimsby, DN31 1HB

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Printed ticket or electronic version on your mobile or tablet is fine. We will need to check your name off against the booking details.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

If there is a change of name please contact the organiser at the above email address, so the attendee list can be amended for the tour guides.

If this tour is oversubscribed, will there be another opportunity to book?

This is an extra date due to the popularity of the previous date. It is hoped to have future opportunities to view the building should it become part of the Townscape Heritage Project for Cleethorpes. Any such tours will be pormoted via Eventbrite.
