Event description

Description

We are pleased to invite you to our event organised in partnership with Big Local North Brixton and Lambeth Council. It will bring together community groups and churches to talk about the issue of holiday hunger and its effects on children from households on over stretched budgets, identify assets and resources available locally and potential for partnership work to alleviate holiday hunger. The aim is to develop the existing provision in order to support more children and their families by preparing a coordinated response for next summer. It would also be a good opportunity for ATTENDEES FROM OTHER BOROUGHS AS WELL to start productive discussions on the issue in their own areas.

Summer holiday is a time of the year most people look forward to but for the many children who receive free school meals(FSM) during term time and for others who, albeit from low income households, are just above the threshold to qualify for FSM, holidays mean hunger, isolation and inactivity.

Communities, organisations and food agencies are already doing a lot of work, looking at what should be done to alleviate holiday hunger. We see Foodbanks taking on the responsibility of feeding families but most of them use the referral system, which some families do not use due to the stigma attached.

Together Southwark and the Diocese of Southwark for the last two years have been looking at how they engage with churches and the community to address specifically the holiday hunger problem. Having made some progress, we know that answers lie with all of us and that working in isolation does not yield the much needed impact.

Your presence would be greatly appreciated to share your thoughts.
