Good nutrition, physical and mental health are vital for coping with stress and the pace of modern life. Without them, the side-effects of stress can have a direct impact on how well you function and they may exacerbate conditions for disease. However, if you optimize your health through diet, exercise and mindfulness, it can improve functioning and help prevent depression and anxiety.

What are the aims of this course and what will it explore?

This highly interactive event will explore theories and demonstrate practical ways to improve and maintain the physical and mental health of you, your friends, family and co-workers.

The morning session will:

  • Increase awareness of stress indicators from a mental health perspective

  • Explore the neurological functioning and impact of anxiety and depression

  • Provide you with strategies to manage your well-being, that compliment your lifestyle

  • Explore the barriers you may have in attending to your mental health positively

  • Exploration of the importance of communication in well-being and how to do it effectively

  • Develop an understanding of how you may sabotage your goals at the expense of your well-being

  • Encourage you to consider a shared responsibility for mental health and what this looks like

  • Provide you with an easy to digest educational resource of all the areas covered to help you maintain your goals

The afternoon session will cover:

  • Research supporting the use of certain foods and nutritional supplements

  • How to nutritionally support the side-effects of mental health treatment (medication prescribed by medical practitioners)

  • Foods to use and foods to avoid when planning nutrient dense meals when appetite is low

  • Foods to use and foods to avoid to reduce the onset of depression, stress and anxiety

  • A tasting session of delicious, quick and easy to prepare recipes which will include the foods covered so far, as well as those that can alleviate common symptoms of stress depression and anxiety.

  • Potential contradictions regarding certain supplements

  • Other tried and tested favourite dishes, with references to support and use all the foods mentioned in the session, in an educational resource for you to take home

  • Support around exercise regime ideas and information for beginners

  • A gentle stretch and exercise demonstration, including ideas for incorporating exercise to boost endorphins.

By the end of the afternoon session you will have:

  • A deeper understanding of protective food and how to incorporate them into your diet

  • A greater understanding of foods that support and hinder treatment, together with the knowledge of which foods provide the most dense sources of energy

  • Access to and an understanding of related research around foods and supplements

  • A selection of recipes and creative solutions to meet your dietary needs

  • A increased ability to produce individualised programs (for practitioners)

  • The chance to interact with Emma to gain answers and further ideas pertinent to your specific work or personal experience

  • The chance to network with other individuals and practitioners interested in nutrition

Who is the course for?

The course is suitable for:

  • Individuals who want to increase their awareness of reducing risk of and/or managing depression, stress and anxiety

  • Individuals who know or care for someone with depression and/or anxiety

  • Health care professionals of various disciplines who wish to give practical and nutritional ideas

  • Nutritional therapists, nutritionists, dieticians, counsellers and students

  • Those who provide information on depression , anxiety and stress prevention and supply patient support to the public

Course Style:

Both sessions will be explorative and interactive, containing tasks designed to evoke conversation to aid your learning and the application of the knowledge shared, to your own life-style needs.

There will be a food tasting session in the afternoon but participants will not be involved in the food preparation.

There will be educational resources from both speakers in context of their own areas; these will include areas covered and recipes

Course Structure:

Registration 9.30-10.00

Session 1: 10.00-13.00

Alex will take the first session and cover the psychological aspects of health and well-being to develop the knowledge and understanding for the afternoon content.

Alex will share her knowledge and experience whilst getting you to engage in small activities in order for you to adapt the content to your own needs and situations.

Session 2: 14.00-17.00

Emma will build upon the knowledge and skills developed in the morning by discussing the role of food and fitness to support physical and psychological well-being and to combat associated symptoms. Emma will share her knowledge and experience of 15 years whilst you engage in small group activities to allow for a more intimate delivery of relevant information.
