Event description
A workshop for collective action to improve resilience for Medway soft fruit growers, the supply chain, water and the environment.

About this Event

Join the team at the Holistic Water for Horticulture (HWH) workshop to talk about project updates and start collective action to support the future of the Medway's soft fruit sector, environment and water resources .

South East England - including the Medway area - is home to a large slice of the UK soft fruit sector. However, this growing sector is situated in a sourcing catchment that is water scarce, densely populated in areas and vulnerable to both direct and indirect effects of climate change.

This workshop addresses the need for retailers, soft fruit businesses and stakeholders to work collectively to improve water and supply chain resilience.

This will be done by sharing know-how through a common framework and testing and demonstrating on site measures to manage runoff by (i) capturing it for irrigation and (ii) managing excess runoff using nature based methods like sediment traps, constructed wetlands, floral interventions and biodiverse ponds

Changes in resilience as a result of these innovative measures will be assessed and communicated through a shared framework that allows retailers, growers and consumers to share, analyse and discuss information.

This approach will help "future-proof" the soft fruit supply chain - allowing it to bounce back from challenges such as a shortages or excess of water using - through dialogue and applying suites of measures designed to anticipate change.
