Event description

Description

Our 2017 Conference will focus on securing the delivery of affordable rural housing. The Scottish Government is committed to building 50,000 houses during this parliamentary term - how do we ensure that rural communities receive their fair share of this investment?

The conference will feature a keynote speech by Kevin Stewart MSP (tbc), Minister for Local Government and Housing. The Minister will outline his commitment to deliver affordable rural housing and to find solutions to infrastructure, land and planning obstacles.

We also welcome Andy Wightman MSP who will discuss barriers and possible solutions to rural housing development with Graham Reid, Head of Development, North of Scotland, Savills and Neil Clapperton, Chief Executive, Grampian Housing Association (tbc).

In our afternoon keynote session, Professor Jim Hunter will discuss the debate on "rewilding" and argue that rural Scotland needs "repeopling" and housing policy has to support rural regeneration.He is joined by Alsadair Stephen from Dualchas Architects who will set out a radical agenda for rural housing and rural development.

The conference will also feature a number of workshops including;

Moray Finch from Mull & Iona Community Trust will provide a practical example of repeopling the small community of Ulva Ferry with the development of two community owned "passive houses" for rent.

Most affordable rural housing in England is developed through rural exceptions sites. Sue Chalkley, Chief Executive of Hastoe Housing Association, one of the largest affordable rural housing developers in England, will highlight how they have successfully developed in the countryside and discuss how planning policy in Scotland could secure much more land for affordable housing.

Linsay Chalmers from Community Land Scotland on the opportunities for housing of the Land Reform and Community Empowerment Acts.

Michael Chisholm from Highland Small Community Housing Trust on the Highland Self Build Loan Fund (tbc).

Derek Logie from Rural Housing Scotland on the development of Mutual Home Ownership Cooperatives in rural Scotland.

Our Annual Conference is the premier rural housing conference held in Scotland. It brings together a broad range of delegates from across sectors and across rural Scotland to share experiences, knowledge and learn new ideas to deliver rural housing and development in Scotland.
