Event description

Description

Come and explore our fantastic plants, animals and habitats as they change through the seasons. Sessions are delivered by our dedicated Learning Team and tailored to ensure there’s always something new to do.

FAQ’s:

What will we do?

Each session will be different but our Learning Team will make sure that your children get hands on with the wildlife of our reserve, from pond dipping to minibeast hunting, birdwatching to blackberry painting. The aim is to be outside as much as possible so please come prepared for the weather. In the event of really bad weather we may retreat indoors for nature themed crafts such as making bird feeders or bug hotels. Fingers crossed it is always sunny on the Suffolk Coast!

Do I need to stay with my children?

Yes, we would love you to be a part of your child’s exploration of our reserve. We are happy for parents to supervise up to 4 children, they don’t have to all be their own so if you want to take it in turns with a fellow parent that is fine but they do need to know that they have been given the responsibility of looking after your kids!

Can I book an under 5 onto one of your sessions?

Sadly not, the sessions are designed for 5 – 11 year olds, we are happy for younger siblings to be present during the session (see below). If your child is under 5 why not book onto our Minsmere Reedlings sessions, specially designed for under 5s, 10am – 12:00 on the same day.

Can I bring a sibling that is under 5?

Children under 5 are welcome to accompany the group and may well love being a part of things. However, the sessions are designed for children aged 5 – 11. If you are bringing a sibling under 5 you need to be aware that they might not be able to participate in all the activities and there might not be sufficient resources or equipment for them to take part in some sessions. You are still responsible for the older child(ren), accompanying children count towards the maximum of 4 children per parent (see above). If you are happy that your under 5 will be happy to be outside for the duration of the session and that you will be able to supervise all the children you have brought with you then please do bring them along, there is no charge for an accompanying sibling under 5 or over 11.

Can I bring along a sibling over 11?

Similar to the question above, yes so long as you are able to supervise all your children. They might prefer to be part of our sessions for 11s and upwards, these run from 1:30 – 3:30 on the 1st Thursday of the month and involve practical conservation tasks and more grown up habitat exploration – species identification, discussion about conservation issues etc. There is a risk that older children can dominate the sessions for younger children, if you could let them know that they need to let their little brother or sister take the lead then that should be fine. Be aware that the RSPB team member might ask them to take a back seat if required.

Where do we meet?

Sessions run from the Discovery Centre, if you are not sure where this is please arrive 10-15 minutes early and check in at Reception. The team there will be able to direct you to join us.

What equipment/clothing do I need to bring?

Suitable clothing and footwear for the weather, waterproof jackets and trousers if it’s wet, suncream and sunhats if it’s hot. Remember it is often a bit colder and windier on the coast so what might be T-shirt weather at home could be jumper and jacket weather here. You don’t need to bring any specialist equipment (see below). Long sleeves are a good idea in summer due to biting insects.

Can I bring my own pond net/binoculars/butterfly net etc etc.?

There’s no need, we have a good stock of equipment for you to use during the activities. If your child would prefer to use their own binoculars then that’s fine but we can’t allow use of pond nets from other locations as this might spread pests and diseases between water courses. If they really want to bring their own bug jar, magnifier, pooter etc. etc. then that is fine but we can’t be held responsible for any loss or damage.

Will you feed our children?

Sorry no, please bring any snacks you think your child might need for the session and some sanitiser gel/spray etc to ensure they’re clean enough to eat them. The café does a great selection of food so you could always pop in before or after the session.

Will you water our children?

It’s best that they bring their own water bottle but we can refill if required and have some cups for them to drink out of should you forget. However, we might not be that close to the Discovery Centre during the session.

My child is very shy/quiet/nervous/loud/excitable, my child requires additional support will they be OK?

That is difficult for us to answer in an FAQ. All team members are trained to try and ensure that all activities are accessible for the widest possible range of requirements and often children that struggle in one situation flourish in the natural surroundings of our reserve. If you have any specific concerns please feel free to get in touch with Chris our Learning Officer, his email is christopher.ford@rspb.org.uk

My child has mobility issues, can they take part?

That is difficult for us to answer in an FAQ but we can usually accommodate most issues particularly if we know in advance. The terrain around the reserve is, in places, stony, rooty, sandy, muddy, covered in leaves, full of rabbit holes, wet, dry and everything in between. It’s generally not a problem to adjust a session but we would need to know in advance so that we can plan effectively. If you have any specific concerns please feel free to get in touch with Chris our Learning Officer, his email is christopher.ford@rspb.org.uk

Are there toilets?

Yes, at the Discovery Centre.

What's the refund policy?

Customers can cancel up to a week in advance by contacting the site team and a full refund will be issued. Less than 24 hours before the event a 50% refund will be given.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, simply turn up to the Discovery Centre and we will tick you off the list.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

You can transfer your booking to another home educators session up to 24 hours before the event.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, just let us know which child(ren) you have booked for.
