We focus on amplifying womxn voices within South London, giving them a space to grow, develop and express themselves as creatively as possible. We want to address the rigidity of traditional poetic forms by welcoming all types of flows and performance styles into our space. At Homegrown Poets, we host a book club every 6 weeks, celebrating authors from all over the world. This month's read is Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, published in 1956.
"I scarcely know how to describe that room. It became, in a way, every room I had ever been in and every room I find myself in hereafter will remind me of Giovanni’s room."
David, an American living in the south of France, reminisces about his life. He begins thinking about his ex-fiancée Hella’s return trip to the United States, while his ex-lover, an Italian immigrant named Giovanni, is set to be executed in the morning.
You can expect open discussion with womxn, followed by a craft session inspired by the novella. Previous craft sessions have included: huck-weaving embroidery, collaging, and analogue graphic poster making. This month's craft will be a surprise and announced on the day of the meeting. We will supply all the materials, so just turn up!. Giovanni's Room is available at most local libraries. Any queries, please contact @homegrownpoets on Instagram.
