About this event

Home & Lifestyle • Home & Garden

Tom will present a number of key projects, with an emphasis on how history and tradition has informed his work. At the core of his practice is a desire to create homes of belonging. Homes that belong to their place, and homes in which his clients feel they belong. The projects have led him on a journey of exploration from primitive round houses to the vernacular buildings that define the quintessential image of a South Downs village. Through the lens of the projects Tom will look at the emergence of the dominant vernacular typology in the late medieval period and enjoy the ways in which the form has evolved subsequently; Georgian Formality; Victorian Romanticism; Edwardian Nostalgia and Contemporary Concerns.

Tom Turner Architects are a 2025 finalist in the 'Creative Conservation' category of the Architect of the Year Awards. They are recognised by Country Life as one of the leading Country House Architects and have been widely published. Tom grew up in the West Sussex countryside and from an early age took an interest in the vernacular buildings of the surrounding landscape. Having graduated top of his year in architecture, he went on to work for some of the leading practices in the country, during which time he won numerous prizes, including the AIA’s award for the UK best building of the year. When Tom set up his practice in 2016, it felt natural for him to return from London to his Sussex roots and the buildings he loves.
