Description

Honest Conversations: Mission & Belief in Dialogue

Speakers include: Rt Rev Dr Russell Barr; Dr Ed Kessler MBE (University of Cambridge); Dr Aman De Sondy (University of Cork); Rev Dr Fran Henderson and Rev Dr Alison Jack (University of Edinburgh).

Mission belongs to the very heart of the Church. Proclaiming the word of God and bearing witness of God to the world is fundamental to the Christian life. The Church has attempted to fulfil this call in varied ways over the centuries; each in their own way attempting to display gospel values as it sets out to love the world.

The Church continues to navigate its role and mission in an increasingly diverse Scotland and a changing world. This conference invites Church of Scotland leaders and members to discuss together the need for an honest approach to interfaith dialogue.

In particular, scriptural, theological and practical justification for reaching out to the wider community and play our unique part as Christians to help society flourish. Dr Ed Kessler MBE, Woolf Institute - Cambridge, will address the question of ‘what replaces replacement theology?’ and offer an approach from a Jewish perspective as to the significance of the belief that the Church replaced the Jews as the ‘New Israel’.

The conference will conclude with a panel discussion with representatives of the Abrahamic faiths (Christian, Muslim and Jewish) to discuss the complex role and concept of Mission in each one.

Scotland has had a long history of other faiths present on our shores and the Church has developed a great deal in reaching out and engaging with religious minorities. This conference is intended to pave the way towards a hopeful future for interfaith interaction that starts with a simple and honest approach to conversation within the Church and with faith representatives.

This day-long conference will encourage lively debate and a significant opportunity to learn and hear from representatives of other faiths in their own terms.

Eligible for Study Leave Funding. Funding available for First Five Years (email MinistriesTraining@churchofscotland.org.uk).
