Hong Kong Freedom Project
Description
Hong Kong Freedom Project
Speaker: Edward Leung
Political freedom is in rapid decline in Hong Kong. Our Seminar speaker Edward Leung, the leader of Hong Kong Indigenous and a research fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, was one of the five candidates barred from running for the Legislative Council by the Electoral Rights Commission for his political views.
Since the Umbrella Movement in late 2014, the Department of Justice (DoJ) of the Hong Kong SAR Government has taken a hardline approach against public protests, supported by aggressive policing. It now regularly prosecutes protestors to the legal limits to deter citizens from expressing their political opinion through demonstrations. The goal of the Hong Kong Freedom Project is to create worldwide awareness of political repression in Hong Kong and to unite people to express solidarity with many of the young protesters who are effectively Hong Kong’s political prisoners. We also promote legal and counselling support for prisoners, their families and friends.
