Description

'Honour' Crimes: Raising Awareness Forum

This is a collaborative forum intended to share ideas and best practice around honour based abuse, honour killing and force marriage. British human rights charity Karma Nirvana (established 1993), based in Leeds, will be supporting the event, headed by CEO Jasvinder Sanghera (CBE). Karma Nirvana actively assist all victims of these crimes and provide training to professionals. Senior lecturer in Criminology at Leeds Beckett University, Rachael Aplin, will provide some findings from her PhD thesis, specifically focusing on the female perpetration of honour based abuse. Women contribute to abuse either through violence, psychological abuse, condoning the behaviours of men or luring victims back through deceptive means. It is important that professionals take cognisance of the roles played by women in order to better safeguard victims of this crime, which include children and vulnerable adults.

The session will conclude with a question answer session. This forum will benefit victims, professionals and academics specialising in this field of honour based abuse.

Refreshments will be provided.
