As temperatures rise year on year, the whole world is becoming more vulnerable to climate chaos. Yet the worst effects are mostly suffered by those communities who have contributed least to climate breakdown. To have any hope of adapting to a changing climate, while also preventing the crisis from getting even worse, we need an global just transition – but countries in the global south are hamstrung by a world economy that works in the interests of the rich.
Colonialism established the world that gave us climate breakdown, as well as the vast disparity in wealth and power that is compounding climate injustice today. Debt, unequal trade and corporate power are driving inequality, poverty and carbon emissions. That’s why we need reparative climate justice – not just compensating for losses but repairing the damage done by climate change and ending the economic violence that’s driving it.
Join us to discuss what a just global transition looks like, and how climate justice movements are taking a stand the world over.
Hope in the Dark is Global Justice Now’s 2022 national gathering, organised in collaboration with Jubilee for Climate, and is open to all.
With panels and workshops on:
- the case for climate reparations
- vaccine inequality
- climate and trade
- debt and climate justice
- mobilising towards a globally just transition
