Event description
Submerge and artist Gérald Kurdian invite Greater Manchester (and beyond) LGBTQ+ young people to join their queer-feminist choir!

About this Event

This January Submerge and artist Gérald Kurdian invite Greater Manchester and surrounding areas LGBTQ+ young people (18-25) to take part in an online queer-choir singing project HOT BODIES – CHOIR.

The Hot Bodies – Choir project gathers queer, trans, non-binary and genderfluid people together to develop new writing and choral singing practices. In partnership with Submerge, the project will be a place for young (18-25) LGBTQ+ participants to connect with their queer identities; to listen, to tell, to sing, and to become the supportive voicing body of others. The project will create a positive and inclusive space for discussion and sharing; people of all queer identities are welcome to join.

Over seven weekly workshops conducted online with the artist (Zoom), Hot Bodies Choir participants will exchange experiences and ideas inspired by the shared reading of queer and feminist manifestos ("The Queer Art of Failure" - J. Jack Halberstam, "A Cyborg Manifesto" - Donna Haraway etc) and work together towards the collective writing of new revolutionary queer texts.

These unique texts form the basis of a new choral score, arranged musically by Gérald Kurdian and performed live by the participants to create an online performance video. The project and performance will be created in English.

Collaborators will come together via zoom for 7 weekly sessions from Weds 27th January to Weds 10th March 2021 (7pm - 9pm UK time)

Participants will engage in:

  • Individual and small group reading of queer and feminist texts.
  • Guided discussion and exchange of ideas, experiences and utopias.
  • The individual and collective writing of a sung manifesto for hot bodies of the future.
  • Vocal technique and choral singing workshops.
  • Recording techniques and tutorials for zoom choirs.

At the culmination of the project, the participants will be invited to perform their manifesto, recording their individual parts to be compiled into a music video to be premiered in a new episode of the artists radical queer web series "Hot Bodies TV".

The project is open to LGBTQ+ queer, trans, genderfluid and non-binary people aged from 18 to 25. We ask that all attendees can commit to a weekly two-hour workshop over the 7 weeks of the project. To take part you will need to be able to access Zoom on a computer or device with a good wifi connection, and the ability to record your choir part on a separate device such as a smartphone or mp3 voice recorder.
