About this event

Helloween 2025 - Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the bridge...

Maintenance schedules meant that Helloween 2025 wasn't supposed to be going ahead this year, but just when you thought it was safe to plan for autumn evenings on the couch watching horror films, while eating your own bodyweight in snacks after a long and hot summer of running, walking, working, or just good old fashioned living, here it is. Back with the excitement and confidence that only Helloween deserves.

6 hours to run, walk, and / or crawl your way to midnight through the darkness of late October, and do it all with a smile on your face, whether it be real or painted on. In return you get a medal, a t shirt, and the type of swagger that shows everyone just how awesome you are for taking part in a 6 hour night race.

Want to really get into the 'spirit' of Helloween? Well, so do we, which is why many who attend the event (and there are a surprising number of repeat offenders) like to wear fancy dress for some or all of the race. This year's theme? Well, it's the one that everyone seems to love to hate, or hate to love, and as Helloween 2025 has popped up like a surprise from a jack in a box, we thought clowns could be a good idea... Fancy dress isn't mandatory, of course, what sort of clown would insist on that? IT is popular, though, and makes six hours of running or walking just a little more fun.

Hell On The Humber is an endurance event series like no other, and the HOTH Helloween Madness - Ellie On The Humber Night Race is the tough and quite mischievous little sister of the series that packs an unexpectedly hard punch.

Helloween sees competitors taking on the tough and demanding Hell On The Humber route on the World famous Humber Bridge for six hours, as they try to complete as many 4 mile laps as possible in that time. There's no upper mileage limit, though there are new course records to be set, and all we ask is that participants complete a minimum of one lap every 3 hours. So, anywhere between 6 and 44 miles (nobody's managed 48 just yet...) How hard could it be???

You don't have to be an Ultra runner to take part in the HOTH Event Series, though many experienced long distance runners from across the country and even Europe do return to the event year after year and rack up some impressive distances. You don't even have to be a runner to take part, walkers are always welcome. All we ask is that you complete the minimum number of laps, you're 16 or over (under 18's require parental consent), and that you be part of the event with the right attitude, that being one of enjoyment, inclusion, and support. Egos aren't welcome! Every finisher receives the coveted finisher's shirt and medal!

The Helloween Madness event is run in memory of our close friend Ellie Penrose, who ran at the event in 2013 and 2014, both times finishing with 28 miles under her belt. Ellie was the youngest ever solo HOTH competitor, finishing her first Helloween race aged just 16, and when she wasn't racing she could often be found helping out behind the scenes, working hard to make sure the runners had everything they needed to enjoy their race. Sadly, Ellie died unexpectedly of Meningitis in August 2015 at the age of 18, and as a mark of respect and remembrance to one of our very close family of friends, the Helloween event has been renamed Ellie On The Humber. Ellie loved being part of the event, and now she will be forever. A number of places each year will be donated to the Ellie Penrose Fund, a charity which has been set up by Ellie's family to raise money to help people under 21 get into, or continue with, their sport. We don't charge for the Ellie entries, we just ask that those running for the fund raise as much as they can in sponsorship and a minimum of the cost of an entry. Interested fund raisers should email karl@hellonthehumber.com for more information. Please note that all Ellie entries are limited.
