Hounslow Together Speaker Series | Demographic Change: How Do We Respond?

By London Borough of Hounslow & Partners

Overview

The second in a series of talks designed to connect local partners with interesting national and local speakers.

Join us on Wednesday 18th February for the second instalment of our Hounslow Together Speaker Series as we tackle one of the most pressing challenges facing our borough: demographic change. These events are designed to connect local partners with interesting national and local speakers, helping us think about challenges and opportunities across the borough.

This event will feature an exciting panel lineup, including Professor Paula Sheppard, human behavioural scientist from Oxford University, Professor Jonathan Portes, expert in demography from King’s College, and Sherry King, Founder and Director, Sandwich Generation Support. Natalie Turner, from Centre for Aging Better will moderate.

These leading experts will share their perspectives on what demographic shifts mean for Hounslow, and how we can respond strategically and collaboratively. This will be an opportunity to hear a thought-provoking panel of speakers, connect with local partners across the business and third sector, and explore how we can respond to demographic change, together.

Moderator:

  • Natalie Turner, Deputy Director for Localities, Centre for Ageing Better. Natalie joined the Centre for Ageing Better in 2016, where her role is to help create more places where people can enjoy later life. Her team works through strategic partnerships with Greater Manchester, Leeds, and Lincolnshire, as well as providing support to the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities.

Panellists:

  • Professor Paula Sheppard, School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography, Oxford University. Professor Sheppard focuses on drivers for family size/reproductive choices in high income countries. Her recent research addresses how social support and gender parity are key drivers of highly educated women’s decision to start families.

  • Sherry King, Founder and Director, Sandwich Generation Support. Sherry and her organisation focus on supporting sandwich carers and advising employers of sandwich carers how to best support these employees.

  • Professor Jonathan Portes, School of Politics and Economics, King’s College. Professor Portes specialises in demography, immigration, and labour markets. His work focuses on how migration, especially Brexit-induced shifts, affects population trends, productivity, public finances, and fertility rates.

  • Additional panellist to be announced very soon!

This event is being kindly hosted by the University of West London at their Brentford campus. Spaces are limited and only those who have registered will be able to attend. We hope to see you on 18th February.
