The demand for connected IoT devices in the Irish market is increasing. Buoyed by the productivity, security and efficiency benefits, firms worldwide have been flocking to install the latest IP technologies on their IT networks. However, this has often been done with little thought to the security ramifications. A recent, and incredibly concerning, example details how hackers broke into many schools’ CCTV systems and streamed live footage of pupils on the internet. This is a big problem, especially with the GDPR’s compliance and enforcement now live and the data protection commissioner in Ireland ready to act. It is important to understand that GDPR compliance and Cybersecurity are explicitly linked, and the deployments of security systems that capture and store Personally Identifiable Information (PII) whilst not make a business compliance, can make them non-complaint.
