Description

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, RDP have invited speaker, Melissa Addey to talk about her entrepreneurial journey and to share advice and guidance on how and why you should be more entrepreneurial in your career.

All are welcomed!

About the session:

In this hour-long session you will meet Melissa Addey, who used to work in business, developing new products and packaging for Sainsbury’s Head Office while studying for a Masters in creativity. She then moved on to a role mentoring entrepreneurs for a government grant programme. She is now an entrepreneurial author, whose highlights include: the 2016 Writer in Residence at the British Library which included running multiple workshops and curating two pop-up exhibitions; being a guest blogger for three months at Mslexia writing magazine and creating an HG Wells poster trail for the Imagine arts festival in Sutton. She is currently doing a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey and writing two novels: one set in China in the 1700s, one in Morocco in the 1100s.

In this session Melissa will look at what “entrepreneurial” means and why it is important to have that attitude regardless of whether you work for someone or not (especially for women) and some ways you could think about being more entrepreneurial in your careers (both academic and non-academic).

About Melissa’s writing:

I write historical fiction, mostly inspired by what I would call ‘the footnotes of history’: forgotten stories or part-legends about interesting women and men. My first novel, The Fragrant Concubine, was longlisted for both the Mslexia Novel Competition and the Historical Novel Society Indie Award. I’m currently doing a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey and writing two novels: one set in China in the 1700s, one in Morocco in the 1100s. If you’d like to try my historical fiction you can get a free novella here. You can read an interview with me at the Virtual Book Club.

I also get curious about many subjects and end up writing non-fiction books or articles about various subjects from parenting to creative writing and entrepreneurship, you can take a look at my other writing here.
