Event description

Description

GIFS (Gentle Interventions For Security) is a project exploring how we can encourage people to make safer and more secure decisions when using technology. We’re specifically interested in how effectively we can design ambient, desk top displays to alert people to potentially insecure behaviour (e.g. locking computer screens, installing updates). As part of our work, we are using the Adafruit Circuit Playground – a microcontroller (a programmable electronic circuit board basically) with built in sensors and LEDs (https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-circuit-playground/overview).

We need to explore different, creative ways to sense this behaviour and provide feedback to encourage people to be more secure. We are therefore hosting a hack day to ask you to help up explore what it possible! We can think of a few different ideas, but we want lots more. If you have experience working with Arduinos or are comfortable programming at a low level and fancy a challenge, come along!

The event is free to attend (but please make sure you get a free ticket to be guaranteed entry!), and all attendees will get free tea, coffee and pizza. We will provide all of the equipment you need (Adafruit Circuit Playgrounds, additional sensors, things that beep and buzz) – you just need to bring along a laptop and a creative mind! The hack day will be hosted by Dr Sarah Wiseman (Goldsmiths, University of London), Chris Smith (Network Engineer) in collaboration with Dr Emily Collins and Dr Joanne Hinds.

GIFS is part of a Home Office funded project, hosted by the University of Bath and Goldsmiths, University of London.
