About this event

The Pantheon, the Amphitheatre of Verona, the temples at Baalbek, the ruins of Pergamon, the Egyptian temples, most of these are thousands of years old, but unlike many other sites they still survive in substantial parts. How did this happen? Is there something special about the construction or building materials? Where later centuries were particularly attracted to the buildings because of the stories associated with them or where they just too perfect to adapt to new uses. How much of the surviving structures is actually Roman and how much represents later restorations/reconstructions? In this course, we will be looking at ancient monuments and how they survived to the 20th century and what needs to happen, for them to remain. What sort of maintenance system supported these buildings?

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to attend in person or will there be a recording?

Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the next week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working catching up with the lectures. The recordings will remain available until the middle of July 2025.

I can't see a buy button, how can I buy a ticket?

There is a known problem with some computers and Eventbrite for online events. If you are one of them, please contact us at mancent.courses@gmail.com so that we can issue PayPal invoices instead.

Will there be a break?

The meeting of 31st October is a designated Reading week, for you to catch up with your readings, recordings, or even your family. There will be no new lecture that day, unless we had to cancel one of the lectures due to unforeseen circumstances.

There isn't a detailed programme heading for each week? When will this go online?

I am currently reading a lot of material for the course and compiling the material, thus the detailed programme is still changing from week to week, as I include new and recently published material as I find it in the libraries. The final week by week breakdown will be available in late September
