How Do You Rock, Dominate & Get Promoted In Your Workplace As A Black Woman...
Fri 21 April 2017, 19:00 – 20:30 BST
Michelle Obama, Serena Williams & Viola Davis are all competent, intelligent, professional women. However, they have been called "aggressive", criticised that they are not "naturally beautiful" and often referred to as "manly".
Being a black woman in the corporate world has its own similar challenges; we are expected to be feminine and fierce, work harder to keep up with the Becky's of the world, compassionate while being powerful. Black women STILL struggle to climb that corporate ladder for a number of reasons - confidence, lack of experience, gaps in work history, maybe we simply need a female mentor to help us find the path or is it something else...
Is the workplace just not used to the way a black woman is different (no better or worse, just different) to their counterparts? Are black women being passed up for promotions or interviews even though you have all the right skills, because you are too "black"? Is our colour still a factor when it comes to our success? In meetings, are we hesitant to speak up or feel as though nobody listens anyway?
This talk is all about making sure that you are showing the BEST, most PROFESSIONAL side of yourself in all those business situations. There will be some hard truths and tons of actionable tips. It’s time to stack the cards in our favour!
This Black Women Talk will focus on six major facets of being a professional, confident black woman. With a talk and a roundtable discussion:
1. How to be more assertive without being aggressive: How do you set boundaries so people know what your values are. Let's jump into strategies with group role play
2. Competent Body Language: Using eye contact, language, gestures to convey authority
3. Communicating more effectively: Responding to feedback (yes even the one you didn't ask for) and how to give feedback without offending others
