Description

Rome

An empire beyond imagining. The pinnacle of human achievement and the envy of the world. The eternal city. A glorious monument to power, culture and learning.

A festering heart of ambition and intrigue. Infested by jackals. Circled by vultures. Worried to death by a thousand tiny vicious mouths all hungry for power and glory.

This mega-game aims to recreate the internal political strife and struggle of the families of Rome. Each of them vying for control over the senate and, in turn, the Republic. Inspired by the show Spartacus: Blood and Sand; the game seeks to encompass all aspect of Roman life from the grand spectacle of the Coliseum to the back-alley assassinations and schemes, from the battle fields of conquest to the trade forums of slaves. Enemies are on all sides. Who can you really trust in your quest for power?

How far will you go for Rome?

What is a Mega-game?

The question I hear most often with new players. Who better to answer this question than Cleveland's Mega-game Council

"Mega-Games are a little like an all day board game and a little like Model UN's irresponsible older brother."

According to the designers of the original Mega-Games, Megagame Makers UK:

"A Megagame is a multi-player game, in which, usually the participants are organised into teams, and those teams into a hierarchy of teams. Megagames are challenging, interesting, and fun. Teams of players take on specific roles - for example as a military headquarters, or a national government, and they interact with other teams representing their opponents or allies.

Honestly, every game is different. Some of them are more like huge wargames and some of them are primarily about diplomacy and negotiation. Mostly, though, they're about communication and information and how sometimes those things are really hard."

How are the teams Structured?

Teams are made up of 4 players. A Dominus (family’s leader), a merchant (who handles the family’s finances in the market and oversee the arena) a general (who manages the family’s military might) and a senator (who sits in the senate and represents the family’s political ambitions). These 4 parts must operate together to drive the ideals of the family and take power in Rome).

What do I need to attend?

A good attitude and an open mind. New players are often quite nervous about a game on this scale but there is no need to be. Everyone is always friendly open and more than willing to talk about experiences they've had in the past with Mega-games if you ask (seriously, don’t get them started). You can come on your own or as part of a group, just let us know when booking or via email and we’ll try and make sure you’re in a team together. All materials will be provided and there will be co-ordinators on site during the day if you have any concerns or queries.

What does the ticket price pay for?

There are inherant costs with running an event such as this. Design, production and testing of materials. Booking costs for hosting space etc. The cost of the ticket will go to help cover these expendatures. We have arranged with the venue to provide all day tea and coffee. This is also included in the ticket price.

What will I get from the day?

The aim of the game is to have fun and come away with some good stories.

There are no win conditions per-say, rather the challenge is to see how far you can advance your own teams agenda throughout the day and it is through this scheming, subversion or outright military supremacy that the game advances and the stories are made.

Any further questions?

Just get in touch and we'll do our best to answer and queries you may have.
