Event Details

The idea of combining several roles into a "portfolio" career is an attractive one for many people; especially for those who need flexibility. In reality however, piecing together a sustainable portfolio of work is challenging.

In this webinar we will examine the different approaches our panellists have followed to create, maintain and enrich portfolio careers in areas as diverse as board/NED positions, entrepreneurship and online gaming.

How to get started
While many people like the idea of flexible work few know how to get started. This is not surprising. Non-standard roles are typically found in non-standard ways and most people need to learn new search skills. We will examine:

  • Why traditional job-hunting techniques (and almost all networking) won’t help

  • Why a “strange CV” combined with a distinctive skill can be ideal

  • How “bridge clients” and “anchor tenants” are the best way to find your first three opportunities.

Creating “deal flow”
Even those who clear the hurdle of getting started still worry about living without a guaranteed pay check. We will explore:

  • What resources you need to start and how long you may have to wait to “break even”

  • How one “anchor skill” can generate a flow of opportunities and follow-on projects

  • How to “upgrade” clients and projects over time to focus on work that is the most rewarding and fulfilling

  • Five models of entrepreneurship that you can fit into a portfolio

  • When it pays to work for free and when you should turn down a project.

Managing a portfolio
We will also examine key practical aspects of portfolio working including:

  • How to keep clients happy and when to sack them.
  • How to price your time/input.
  • Logistics, tools and practicalities for an off-site office.
  • Managing your time and personal organisation
