About this event
This introductory webinar offers a practical exploration of attachment theory for therapists working with individual clients. After a brief overview of key concepts and how attachment patterns are identified, we’ll turn our focus to three core areas of clinical application:
In the therapy room:
- What does it mean for the therapist to be an attachment figure?
- How might a therapist’s own attachment history shape their work?
- We’ll consider how attention to attachment dynamics can help foster earned security and deepen the therapeutic alliance.
In couple relationships:
- We’ll explore how attachment influences partner selection,
- how complementary patterns may become conflictual,
- and how therapists can support individual clients in therapy who are navigating relationship distress.
In grief work:
- How we experience and process loss is deeply shaped by our attachment strategies.
- We’ll reflect on how to recognise these patterns and support clients through complex mourning processes.
While rooted in established research, this session focuses on real-world application and clinical relevance. Whether you’re new to attachment theory or seeking a refresher, the workshop will help you:
- Recognise and compare different attachment strategies in clients and in yourself
- Describe ways to help clients build secure attachment in the therapeutic relationship
- Identify attachment dynamics in relationship and grief issues, and generate effective ways to support individual clients in distress Impact on Practice by strengthening your understanding of attachment dynamics,
This session will support your ability to create safety in the therapy room, reflect on your own countertransference, and work more effectively with relational and emotional intensity. It offers a foundation for compassionate, well-boundaried practice that supports long-term change.

Anne Power
I am a couple therapist based in London and working online with couples and supervisees in the UK.
I started my counselling work thirty years ago and originally worked with clients in the NHS and in voluntary settings. I have trained counsellors, psychotherapists and supervisors and written the books and papers detailed on the Published Works page. My initial training was as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with a special interest in attachment theory. Later I trained in a systemic model and this integration – of attachment and systemic thinking - matches with EFT (Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy) which is the model in which I am now developing my practice.
