If you're running your own business, you probably have at least a vague idea of your dream client. Many business owners go too broad with their marketing and struggle to attract and retain the right clients, leading them into the famine or feast cycle that freelancing can often bring.

Marketing to an unknown audience is a little like standing in the high street with a megaphone shouting about your business. It’s just noise with no real direction and who wants that in their lives? The more specific you are, the better connections you’ll form and the more profitable your business will be.

Being able to clearly define your ideal clients means you can:

Find them more easily online
Communicate the unique value you offer
Talk in terms of their problems and your solutions rather than products and services
Motivate them to WANT to work with you over other solutions

Creating personas goes deeper than simple demographics such as age, gender, and income bracket. If you really want to form meaningful connections, you need to know your clients intimately; what makes them tick, their dreams and ambitions, their challenges, pain points and pleasure points.

This workshop will walk you through the process of describing your ideal client in detail. By the end, you’ll be able to talk about your ideal client as if they were a real person and understand their pain points, motivators and attributes.

This means you'll also be able to communicate exactly why they should work with you!

My story

Professionally I was a badass at marketing. I spent 20 years of my career grafting, learning everything I could, pushing myself forward and going after opportunities to grow and develop. I worked at executive level for the last few years, managing large teams to deliver fantastic results and I thought setting up my own marketing business would be a cinch. Newsflash, it wasn’t!

Six months in and I was ready to call it a day and go back to full-time employment, feeling deflated and a bit of a failure. This didn’t do much for self-esteem I can tell you!

My inner critic was loud during that time;

‘What if I’m not as smart or experienced as I think I am?’

‘There are already so many people talking about this, what do I offer?’

‘I'm great in person but I draw a blank when I sit down to write’

‘I need to offer everything to get enough clients in the door’’

Sound familiar?

The step I missed was really nailing down, out of every possible person who would benefit from my expertise, who were the people who would ‘get me’ and who would benefit the most from working with me.

AND who I would benefit the most from working with. Who lit up my days? Who hungrily took everything I had to offer and rushed to implement it, who got my jokes and appreciated my straight-talking?

So I took some time to reflect and really understand my ideal client. Once I started to only focus on those clients, everything started to click into place and almost overnight the connections and conversations became full of passion and purpose.
