About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

The electricity network faces growing pressure from ageing infrastructure, increased electrification, and the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. To address these challenges, smarter systems are needed for real-time monitoring, precise energy flow control, efficient and cost-effective transmission, and better management of intermittent resources like solar, wind, and battery storage. Advanced semiconductors, superconductors, and wireless power transmission technologies offer opportunities to enhance grid resilience and capacity, reduce costs, and support the transition to a clean power system. However, barriers such as high production costs and system integration challenges must be overcome to modernise energy networks.

Through focusing on this challenge, SIF aims to:

  • Advance the integration of next-generation power electronics and semiconductor technologies to enhance grid efficiency, stability, and capacity.
  • Demonstrate and validate superconducting transmission technologies to support scalable, high-capacity, and low-loss electricity networks.
  • Develop technical and economic evidence on wireless power transmission in the UK to support evaluation of its potential and feasibility.

This workshop will bring together innovators, industry experts, network professionals, and other relevant stakeholders in a collaborative environment to share insights and ideate approaches to address the challenges and barriers to accelerating the development and deployment of advanced energy transmission technology-based solutions to enhanced grid performance.

Please join us to contribute to the conversation, meet other inspiring innovators, and explore collaboration opportunities. The workshop aims to broker relationships and generate ideas that could be further developed into SIF proposals.

About the Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund

The Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund was established in 2021, as a programme with funding of £450m+ over five years, to drive innovation and transformation in energy networks. By the end of 2024, the programme has committed over £270m in total funding across 234 projects in different stages of development (Discovery, Alpha, Beta).

Ofgem and Innovate UK recently launched Round 5 of the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) to address strategic energy sector needs. For more information, please visit the SIF website here: Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) | Ofgem.
