Nuclear fusion is the quest to recreate the power of the stars for almost limitless energy here on Earth. Find out what it takes to reconstruct a star: taming a fuel that is hotter than the Sun; developing materials to handle heat loads higher than a spacecraft re-entering Earth’s atmosphere; and maintaining the device with robots. In 2017 Britain is unveiling its latest ‘star chamber’, MAST Upgrade, at Culham near Oxford.

In this lecture, Professor Ian Chapman, Chief Executive of the UK Atomic Energy Authority will describe the progress and the prospects for fusion power including plans to break the record for fusion power output and work on the ITER international experiment that is under construction in France.

About Professor Ian Chapman

Ian Chapman became CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority in October 2016. He joined the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in 2004 and became Head of Tokamak Science in 2014. Between 2010 and 2014, he led the Stability Programme within Tokamak Science. He has also held a number of international roles in fusion, including acting as a Task Force Leader for JET from 2012 to 2014 and being appointed to the advisory committee for the US experiment NSTX-U in 2013.
