Event description

Description

Dr Debbie Pullinger, Affiliated Staff Member at the Faculty of Education, College Tutor to part-time students, and Fellow of Wolfson College.

This session will offer general principles, adaptable strategies and a few quick-win tips for any academic presentation, from course assessment to keynote. It will cover:

  • Planning a presentation – thinking about your audience, selecting material
  • How NOT to use PowerPoint – and using it effectively
  • Scripting vs ad libbing – mixing and matching, finding what works for you
  • Perfect timing – how to work to a time limit
  • Body and voice – engaging your audience
  • Dealing with nerves

Before returning to academic work, Debbie’s career spanned education, publishing, and working as professional editor and writer. Her research has included visual literacy, multimodality, poetry and performance, which in turn has been informed by her own experience of stage performance and voice training. All of these, combined with her ongoing critical reflection on her own practice and what works, will inform this practical session.
