The York Environmental Sustainability Institute and the York Policy Engine are proud to present the forthcoming Innovation to Impact Series. These events will cover all aspects of policy making, including engaging with stakeholders, developing influence and relationship building.

EVENT 2- How to Influence Policy in the Global Context

Following brief introductions from each of the panellists, the Chair will facilitate a lively discussion to help divulge insights and advice from the panel about their work and their experience engaging with policymakers globally, how they have worked with local policy and the impact they have had; what has their journey been? How did they develop these relationships? This will be followed by a live Q&A with the audience.

GUEST PANEL

Chair - Rob Watt, Head of Strategic Engagement, Stockholm Environment Institute

Rob has responsibility for SEI’s global communications, both internal and external, and oversees SEI’s strategic policy engagement (climate, finance, 2030 Agenda, ocean and biodiversity, and the EU). As Communications Director, Rob and his team of communications experts work in close collaboration with researchers and stakeholders to bridge science and policy.

Dr Razia Fatima, Chief Research & Surveillance, Common Unit (HIV, TB, Malaria), Pakistan

Dr Fatima currently holds the position of Chief Research and Surveillance and conducts national level studies with complex data analysis, including, surveillance, monitoring and reporting at The Common Unit to manage TB, Aids and Malaria, in Pakistan. She is an honorary visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Health Sciences, University of York and voluntary Vice Chair for The Union against TB and Lung Disease, TB section, Paris.

Dr Sushil Baral, Managing Director of HERDi in Nepal

Dr Baral is an experienced health and development expert based in Nepal, specialising in strengthening health systems and health policy and planning at the national and international level. HERD International is a research agency, promoting evidence-informed policies and practices through high-quality research and knowledge management, and thus contributing to improving quality of life.

Professor Rumana Huque, Executive Director of ARK Foundation, Bangladesh

Rumana is a Professor of Health Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Executive Director at ARK Foundation. Her research focuses on tobacco taxation, second-hand smoking, smokeless tobacco and tobacco cessation in Bangladesh. Rumana has wide experience working with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh, local NGOs, and international donor agencies.

The ARK Foundation is a non-government, non-political and not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

Professor Paul Revill, Centre for Health Economics

Professor Revill is the theme lead for Global Health Economic Evaluation and the Director of Thanzi La Onse (Health for All) project. An aim of Professor Revill’s research is to inform better health policy-making, leading to improvements in population health and reduced health inequalities.

The Centre for Health Economics is a world-renowned institute that produces policy relevant research and innovative methods that advance the use of health economics to improve population health.

Dr Helen Elsey, Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre

Dr Elsey is an Associate Professor of Global Public Health in the Department of Health Sciences and the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre. Her research focuses on urban health in low income countries, in particular issues of gender and equity in relation to health risk and behaviour and the development and evaluation of complex public health interventions to improve the health of disadvantaged populations.

The IGDC addresses global development challenges in innovative ways, aiming to create sustainable change that directly benefits communities in low and middle income countries around the world.

Dr Johan Kuylenstierna, Reader, Stockholm Environment Institute, York

Dr Kuylenstierna is a research leader at SEI and has held the position of Centre Director and Policy Director previously for SEI. His key interests relate to atmospheric issues, including air pollution and climate change. As SEI Policy Director he oversaw the enhancement of SEI’s ability to successfully engage with policy and decision making to promote informed decision-making and help achieve SEI’s goals of inducing change towards sustainable development.

The Stockholm Environment Institute is an independent research institute, which has specialised in environment and development research for over thirty year. The York centre sits within the Environment and Geography Department and the research is geared towards translating scientific evidence into information upon which sound policy can be developed and through which behaviour can be changed.
