How to Keep Earth Habitable: Planetary Boundaries Fresco with PURE
Overview
In just three hours, discover what makes Earth habitable and explore the critical processes that sustain life with Planetary Boundaries Fresco, a fun and interactive workshop. Work as a team to understand how human activities impact the nine key Earth-system processes — from climate change and ozone depletion to biodiversity and biogeochemical cycles — and adopt a systemic vision to reduce your impact.
This hands-on, collaborative workshop transforms complex planetary science into clarity, helping participants see the links between processes, thresholds, and human actions — without information overload. Highly visual, gamified, and interactive, it’s used by schools, universities, companies, and governments worldwide.
Why Join?
The concept of Planetary Boundaries, proposed by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, defines nine critical processes that make Earth habitable. Crossing these thresholds risks significant disruption to the planet’s systems — threatening life as we know it. Climate change is one, ozone depletion is another, alongside other vital boundaries.
Through this workshop, you’ll gain a clear understanding of these systems, the risks of exceeding boundaries, and practical ways to act at individual, organisational, and systemic levels.
What You’ll Gain
- A systemic understanding of Earth’s critical boundaries
- Insight into how human actions impact planetary processes
- The ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and confidently
- Tools to identify risks, opportunities, and leverage points for action
- Motivation and a practical pathway to start making a difference
What is Planetary Boundaries Fresco
Planetary Boundaries Fresco is a 3-hour interactive workshop designed to help participants understand the processes that enable life on Earth, the thresholds that sustain habitability, and the human activities that push these systems beyond safe limits. Using a collaborative, hands-on approach, the workshop makes complex Earth-system science accessible, engaging, and actionable.

Workshop Structure
1. Understanding Planetary Boundaries
Dive into Earth’s critical systems through interactive exercises. Learn about the nine planetary boundaries that make life on Earth possible, and explore how human activities push these systems toward or beyond their thresholds.
- Recreate Earth Systems: Work in small groups to explore the processes that sustain our planet and see the impacts of human activity.
- Learn with Cards: Use visual cards to identify each planetary boundary, what it enables, and what threatens it.
- Create and Reflect: Map the boundaries, connect processes, and visualise the systemic impacts. Present your findings and insights to the group.
2. Reflecting on Implications
Understanding planetary boundaries can be overwhelming. This session provides space to process insights and develop a mindset of agency, responsibility, and motivation.
3. Action & PURE’s Awareness to Impact Path
Explore actionable solutions at individual, organisational, and systemic levels. Using PURE’s Awareness to Impact Path, participants leave with a practical plan to reduce their impact and contribute to a resilient, sustainable future.
