Description

About the course

This course will offer practical guidance on how to lead a choir practice - everything from suggestions for vocal warm-ups, to the basics of conducting. It will explore tried and tested methods for setting up a new choir and maintaining it thereafter.

Who should attend?

Those who would like to run a school choir, but have not done so before (specialists and non-specialists alike); experienced music teachers who’d like a refresher course on how to run a choir successfully; those with responsibility for enrichment or extracurricular provision.

The tutor

John Stephens is director of music at the Inspiration Trust. He has 18 years of teaching experience in state schools and academies, both as a classroom teacher and a peripatetic instrumental and vocal teacher. Alongside that, John has spent ten years in the independent school sector, seven years as lecturer at the University of East Anglia, and is an experienced leader of CPD for both music specialists and non-specialists.

He has worked internationally as a musical director and spent 13 years as director of music at Great Yarmouth Minster before joining the Inspiration Trust. He is in demand as an organ recitalist and accompanist, and maintains a private teaching practice.

John has a passion for enabling young people to develop their musicianship through ensemble music making and formed the Orchestrate! project in 2014, which includes a training orchestra, youth orchestra, and youth choir.

He holds a master’s degree in conducting, and is a licentiate of Trinity College London as a pianist.
