Event description

Description

The last five years have seen the launch of hundreds of new independent magazines. At this class on Thursday 5th January 2017, the team behind the award-winning Slow Journalism magazine Delayed Gratification will share the secrets of how to launch and run a successful independent magazine.

In this class you will:

  • Understand how to turn your magazine idea into reality
  • Find out how to identify a successful editorial niche
  • Learn how to commission writers and designers
  • Be briefed on subs, distribution and marketing strategies
  • Discover how to survive and thrive beyond the first year

You will leave with a good insight into the independent publishing industry and a strong idea of how to set about launching an independent magazine.

The class will take place in a lovely 19th-century lecture theatre at King’s College London (KCL): attendees should arrive at KCL’s Strand Campus reception between 6pm and 6.25pm on the night.

Tickets cost £10 for subscribers to the magazine and £25 for non-subscribers. We'll ask for your delivery postcode to verify your subscription when you book a subscriber ticket.

The tutors
Five years ago the Slow Journalism Company launched Delayed Gratification, a quarterly news magazine that returns to big events after the dust has settled. The magazine has been praised for the quality of its journalism, ground-breaking infographics and sleek design by The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Economist, and was highly commended as Publishing Innovation Of The Year by the PPA in 2015.

Since 2012 the team have been teaching masterclasses in features writing, how to make infographics and independent publishing. They have taught at the Guardian, the UNHCR, the University of Oxford, Nissan and Selfridges.

You

This class is ideal for people with an interest in independent magazines. You don't need to have any experience in the industry or an idea for a magazine to attend.
