Description

Learn how to come up with strong story ideas, get words published in your dream publications and make your living as a freelance writer.

Many people think that making money as a writer is nearly impossible, and that it’s necessary to get a mundane day job if you want income stability and job security while pursuing a career in writing. But in reality, the internet has opened up new opportunities for scribes and there’s never been a better time to kickstart a writing career.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years, freelance journalism is an attainable and appealing way to hone your skills and make a living. This practical workshop will guide you through the inner workings of the journalism and publishing industries, offering insights and advice on pitching to editors and getting stories published.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Get started in freelance journalism – as your main job or as a lucrative sideline

  • Come up with story ideas you can sell to magazines, newspapers and websites

  • Pitch your stories effectively for different publications

  • Transition from student or hobby writing to paid, professional work

  • Deliver great written work that will keep editors coming back for more

  • Build your public profile through social media marketing

  • Make a lucrative income as a writer by taking an entrepreneurial approach to your work

The course fee includes refreshments, VAT and booking/transaction charges.

About the tutor

This three-hour workshop is led by award-winning freelance journalist and editorial consultant Lauren Razavi who writes for titles such as The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Atlantic, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Wanderlust Magazine. She has also delivered workshops about freelance journalism at the University of Cambridge and as part of Guardian Masterclasses.

Lauren’s success as a feature writer and foreign reporter led her to visit 30 countries before she’d graduated from university, and fund a master’s degree in creative writing entirely through freelance journalism. She was then headhunted for a position as part of Google’s content strategy department.
