Follow up to our Beginners Workshop

All the Fun Stuff – in Roundhay Park

CLick to save £10 on your booking

The ideal follow up to last week’s beginners session in Leeds is the Night Workshop in Roundhay Park.

It’s proper night photography – we’ll be shooting :-

  • The BMX park
  • The playground – lighting it with coloured torches
  • The Band Stands
  • The Water Fountain
  • The Castle – Folly

A variety packed night for people with experience taking photos at night

What you need to bring
Camera

Night photography is best done with a DSLR camera, but many bridge cameras are good enough these days.

They need to be able to :-

  • have “manual” exposure – “M” on the selection dial
  • have up to 30 seconds exposure time – some have less, which is not ideal
  • be able to change the ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed

Tripod

This is ESSENTIAL – you will be standing your camera on a tripod for many seconds to let light get into the camera, without a tripod you can’t do this workshop unfortunately

If you are looking to buy one, you are better looking second hand for a Manfrotto, Benbo or similar on EBAY than buying a budget – please contact us for free advice.

Lenses

Wide lenses are best for this workshops – in fact, it’ll probably be the only one we use. Wide means from 10mm to about 28mm – most KIT lenses are fine

Other stuff

  • Head Torch – you look daft, but it keeps your hands free if you’re looking for things in your bag!
  • LED Torch – the more of these we have the better, these are affordable on EBAY these days – you want one with 1000’s of lumens, look for “sky ray” or similar. For under £20 you should be able to get a powerful torch
  • Coloured Gels – optional, but if you look for theatrical gels online, you can get packs of coloured plastic to use on the night. They change the white beam of your torch into any colour you like
  • Fully charged battery AND a spare if you can
  • Empty memory cards – make sure you have space!
  • cable release – handy but not essential
  • warm clothes – we are standing around a lot, so this means cold will get to you more than normal. Many layers are recommended.

What you need to know

If you’ve been on the Leeds beginners course, this just follows and builds your knowledge from there.

This is a night photography beginners workshop – we would expect a reasonable level of experience with the camera to attend.

Understand how to change these on your camera:-

  • ISO
  • Shutter speed
  • Aperture
  • Select Manual exposure

If those terms are unfamiliar we recommend booking us for a 1-2-1 beginners session to explain how these things work.

What we’ll show you

Following on from Leeds, this night shows you the tricky business of focussing in the dark… how on earth do you do that???

It’s amazingly easy when you know how – we’ll show you!

Also, we start to show you the fun things

This will set you up for things including :-

  • light graffiti – writing with torches
  • light painting – lighting things – the main thing tonight
  • wire wool sparks – I’ll be doing this, but show you how it works so you can try it on your own
