Event description

Description

How to move an Antarctic Base

Tuesday 17 October

6pm - 7pm

At over 1000 tonnes, it is not easy to pull a research station 23km across Antarctica, but in 2016 that is just what happened. After a previously dormant crack in the ice threatened to isolate the Halley VI base from the rest of Antarctica, action was needed. Ramboll’s Ben Rowe and Oliver Darke from the British Antarctic Survey will discuss this feat of human ingenuity and engineering in the hostile Antarctic environment.
