Description

**This training course runs for three Saturdays, all day from 9:30-5, and the fee covers all three dates.**

How to Run Your Own Writing Workshops is a practical 3-day training course aimed at giving you everything you need to know to set up and run your own successful writing workshops. It takes place on Saturdays at The Poetry School in London: 28 September, 26 October and 16 November 2019.

When we started running our own writing workshops, we gathered information from books, courses and other people. We are both writers, but not only did we need to know about the benefits of writing in groups, we needed to figure out how to encourage other people to write, how to make it fun, engaging and inspiring, how to create a safe environment for the participants, how to plan and market the workshops, and make sure they were targeted well. Our study at masters level also helped hone our knowledge and practice. With over 25 years' experience between us, we want to pass on what we've learned and so have distilled all we know into a three-day course we'd love to share with you.

This course is for you if:

- you work for an organisation with marginalised groups and want to run your own inhouse writing for health and wellbeing workshops.

- you are a creative writing student, graduate or lecturer who wants to develop your practice to work in the community.

- you work in a museum, library or other arts organisation and want to set up writing workshops for the public to encourage engagment with your work.

- you are a counsellor or therapist who wants to offer writing as part of your therapeutic practice.

- you are a writer who would like to branch out and supplement your writing income.

Why writing is a brilliant tool for wellbeing

Writing is shown to positively impact mental and physical health. It's a physical, mental and emotional process which links the body and mind.

Writing in groups bonds, connects, supports, encourages, and develops the confidence and value of members. It also ticks the five ways to wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, give. It's fun too!

Why writing workshops need trained facilitators

It enables words to be found so stories can be told. Stories that may never have been told before. It can touch people deeply. Writing can transform and heal. For this reason writing workshops need to be well led by skilled facilitators who understand group dynamics and how to hold a safe, supportive and enjoyable space for all group members.

Groups that are not skillfully facilitated can leave people feeling vulnerable, unsupported and in a worse place than when they started.

Good writing workshops need skilled/trained facilitators. We know the potential of writing to transform and heal. And this was our inspiration to develop the course. We want to see more skilled facilitators delivering more workshops so that more people can benefit.
