Event Details

For an ever-growing variety of independent authors of fiction and non-fiction alike, affordable and accessible self-publishing has become the method of choice for bringing their books to readers.

Taught by leading self-published authors and publishing experts, this two-day Masterclass for writers interested in self-publishing will explore how to create professional quality books and reach the audience you want. With practical classes covering the essentials of editing, cover design, production, distribution and marketing, and tutors including bestselling independent authors Polly Courtney (Feral Youth) and Joanna Penn (the ARKANE series) and former Penguin art director Andrew Smith, the weekend will cover all the benefits and pitfalls of being your own publisher, and the realities of making money from your own imprint.

Curator profile

Nick Sidwell is the Digital Publishing Manager for Guardian Books. He has previously worked for independent publisher Elliott & Thompson, and Icon Books.

Tutor and speaker profiles

Edward Peppitt worked in publishing for twenty years before founding Balloon View, a publisher of business and personal development books and courses. He consults for the publishing industry, and also teaches and coaches writers to get their book published profitably and successfully. He runs seminars and workshops every year, helping authors to get their books published effectively and selling profitably.

Polly Courtney is the bestselling author of six books. She never intended to become a writer, but discovered her passion 'accidentally', whilst penning a semi-autobiographical expose of life as a junior investment banker - a tale that went on to become her first novel, Golden Handcuffs. After working with a traditional publishing house, she moved into self-publishing and is an expert in promoting and marketing her own work.

Simon Flynn is the former Managing Director of Icon Books, publisher of the recent bestseller 'The Etymologicon'. He has edited numerous award-winning and bestselling titles; his first book, 'The Science Magpie' is published this October.

Andrew Smith has over a decade of experience working on bestselling book covers. He set up his own design agency in 2012 following ten years working within the design department of Penguin Books. As Deputy Art Director of a leading publishing brand he worked on a broad range of titles, from John Le Carre to Claire Tomalin.

Joanna Penn is the independent author of ARKANE thrillers, Pentecost, Prophecy and Exodus, as well as the non-fiction book, Career Change. Joanna's site for writers has been voted one of the Top 10 blogs for writers and self-publishers and offers articles, audio and video on writing, publishing and book marketing. Joanna is also an Advisor to the Alliance of Independent Authors and a professional speaker. Connect with Joanna on twitter @thecreativepenn
